How Beepr knows which side of the street the camera points at
The hardest problem in a camera-alert app isn't finding cameras. It's not beeping — at the camera pointed the other way, at the zone you're driving past on a parallel street, at the same camera for the third time while you sit at a red light inside it.
A beep that cries wolf gets muted within a week. So most of Beepr's engine is dedicated to shutting up. Here's how it works.
Every camera knows its direction
Each record in our database carries an approach bearing — the compass heading of the traffic it enforces — plus a tolerance. Northbound camera, southbound you: silence. Cameras that watch multiple approaches get one record per enforced direction.
Arm, then fire
Get within a few hundred meters of a camera and it silently arms: GPS sampling ramps up, the beep is pre-loaded into memory. Nothing happens yet. The alert fires only when your heading matches the enforced approach and the geometry says you're genuinely inbound — inside the school zone's span, or with the red-light camera actually ahead of you. Turn onto a street with a camera just past the corner and the beep lands within a second or two of your heading settling.
One beep per pass
An alert session ends when you leave the area — not when time passes. Stop-and-go through a school zone? One beep, total. Circle the block and come back? That's a new pass, and you'd want the reminder. A movement gate keeps the app silent under 8 mph, so parking next to a camera — or living inside its radius — never beeps.
School zones tell time
School-zone cameras only ticket during posted hours, so the beep changes character: during enforcement windows, speeding gets fast urgent beeps; after hours it's a light heads-up you can turn off entirely. Five distinct alert types, each with its own switch, tone, and count.
Why bother?
Because trust is the product. The whole promise is that you can leave your phone in your pocket and believe the beep. Every false positive spends that trust; every quiet drive past an opposite-direction camera earns it back.
