Miami-Dade school-zone cameras, explained — where they are and when they actually ticket
If you drive in Miami-Dade, the fastest-growing ticket in your life is the $100 school-zone camera ticket. School-zone speed cameras went live across the county starting in late 2024, and by early 2026 they accounted for roughly two-thirds of all speeding tickets in the county.
Here's how the system actually works — because the rules are more specific than most drivers think.
The rules (Florida Statute 316.1896)
- Trigger: more than 10 mph over the applicable limit. 9 over doesn't ticket. 11 does.
- Fine: $100 flat, by mail, no points.
- When: school days only, from 30 minutes before school starts to 30 minutes after it lets out. During arrival and dismissal windows the reduced school-zone limit (often 15–20 mph) applies; mid-day, you're measured against the regular posted limit.
- Not weekends, and not summer break — enforcement pauses when school's out and resumes in mid-August.
The catch
Every school sets its own hours. One zone enforces 6:45 AM to 4:00 PM, the one a mile away runs 7:00 AM to 3:35 PM. The signage is legally required, but if you drive past forty school zones a week, you are not reading forty little placards at 40 mph. Our honest take
Kids crossing streets shouldn't dodge speeding cars — 15 mph zones exist for a reason, and we're glad drivers slow down. But a system where a private vendor takes a cut of every $100 ticket, where hours vary block to block, and where you learn the rules by mail? That's a revenue machine wearing a safety vest. The fix for both problems is the same: know the zone is there before you're in it. That's the whole app.
